What is an immune system and how does it fight infection?
The immune system is your body’s natural defence against infections such as Coronavirus, and relies heavily on the food you eat. It’s made up of organs, cells, tissues, and proteins.
When you’re sick, your immune system works to attack infections, working to defend your body and boost recovery. Although it takes time and often medical assistance, your immune system plays a key role in making you healthy again.
How does food support a healthy immune system?
Nutritious food is essential for a strong and healthy immune system. This is because the organs, cells and chemicals that make up the immune system are formed and maintained using the food we eat.
To build a strong immune system, you need a healthy supply of energy, vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats from your meals. You can achieve this by eating a healthy, balanced diet full of the recommended daily amounts of fruit, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and dairy.
What types of food support my immune system?
Studies have shown that eating foods high in vitamins and minerals – vitamin C, E, A and zinc (mineral) – maintain a strong immune system. This is because they play a huge role in building and maintaining its function. We’ve created a list of these immune-supporting foods below. Be sure to add a few of these tasty foods to your shopping list!
|Food group||Food||Immune boosting nutrient|
|Vegetables||Sweet potato, carrot, capsicum, leafy greens||Vitamins A, C & E|
|Fruits||Oranges, kiwi fruit, strawberries & mango||Vitamin A & C|
|Grains||Wheat, quinoa, rice||Vitamin E & Zinc|
|Meats & alternatives||Lean meats, eggs, legumes, seeds & nuts||Vitamin A & Zinc|
|Dairy||Milk, cheese||Vitamin A & E|
Can a poor diet hurt my immune system?
Evidence suggests that nutritional deficiencies can weaken the immune system and make you more vulnerable to infections. This is why it is important to nourish your body with healthy, wholesome foods that support a healthy immune system.

Are there other ways I can support my immune system?
Alongside a healthy, wholesome diet, another way to support the immune system is through getting enough sleep. Our bodies need sleep to rest and recharge, which is another key factor in maintaining a healthy immune system. Most adults need 7 – 9 hours of sleep each day to maintain a healthy routine.
